New drug law in the Netherlands

The Dutch Senate has approved a bill banning hundreds of types of so-called designer drugs. The law came into force on July 1.

According to the NRC newspaper, until now, manufacturers of designer drugs have managed to circumvent the law and bring a narcotic substance to the market, only slightly changing its composition so that it eventually turns out to be legal. After replacing only a couple of molecules, a new substance is formed that does not fall under the existing laws.

According to the Dutch Secretary of State for Youth and Sports, Vincent Karremans, the ban will prevent the health risks posed by designer drugs.

“With this ban, we are sending a clear signal: this thing is dangerous, stay away from it,” the newspaper quoted Karremans as saying.

It is assumed that the new law will also be able to facilitate the work of the police and judicial authorities, including when conducting international investigations on requests for legal assistance from other countries.
