Description

Metonitazene (Cas 14680-51-4) is an opioid analogue of 2-benzylbenzimidazole with analgesic properties. This drug belongs to the benzimidazole-opioids, which can act on the μ-opioid and has a high activity of action, several times higher than morphine.
History
Etonitazene and other nitazenes were created in the 1950s by a Swiss chemical company (CIBA or modern Novartis) as part of a research company to identify new substances for future use in medicine and other industries, but that never came to pass. They have never been used or marketed for medical purposes.
Chemistry
Metonitazene is an opioid benzimidazole homologue of etonitazene.
Pharmacology
Metonitazene has been shown to be about 10 times stronger than morphine.  When used regularly, methonitazene can cause opioid dependence. Improper dosages can cause vomiting and respiratory depression.
This drug appeared on the black market in mid-2020, there are several reported deaths from overdose of this drug in the U.S.
Subjective effects
Exposure to methonitazene may cause effects similar to other opioids, such as pain relief, euphoria and drowsiness. Its effects are similar to other benzimidazole opioids, heroin, fentanyl and morphine.
Legal status
Metonitazene is not listed in the 1971 Convention on Psychotropic Substances.

Metonitazene is a schedule I controlled substance in the US and is also illegal in Germany, the UK and Sweden.
